On May 5th of 2005, our President proclaimed a celebration across this land

Cinco de Mayo, El Dia de la Batalla de Puebla, The Day of the Battle of Puebla

Known by many names but the meaning is all the same

We celebrate Mexican heritage, pride, and freedom, taken from this day in History

This ultimate fight had taken place the first years of the American Civil War.

Mexican Independence Day, this is not; a celebration of an unlikely victory, it is.

Under French Occupation is how this came to be

Outnumbered and ill equipped on this date in 1862, as shots rang through the Puebla sky

The Mexican Army fought its best fight

With half the manpower of the invading French, a bloody and gruesome fight, it must have been

Stepping into the ring like warriors; they fought diligently, against an undefeated force

They rose victorious in a battle whose odds were against them

So today, we celebrate; every warrior, every fight, every bloody death that screamed, “Freedom” on that night.
